So you’ve driven for miles to the far west tip of Wales, the tides are up in the sevens but the wind has shifted N or NW 5-6 and
the paddle out is too awesome for a little boat. What can you do?
Give up and just look at others' pictures and movies of them having a
great time!
Rockhopping: this is not the soft option on Bitching, especially if the conditions have stopped you from paddling Ramsey Sound.
Get on the water at any of the local harbours (be careful with North Coast ones because of the tidal currents), look for steeper
sections of cliff and watch how the water changes as waves curl around the boulders, chokes, gulleys and caves. There is lots of fun
to be had. The same as running waterfalls – you need to find out what’s at the bottom before you hop your rock…look out for boulders
etc that may drain dry, trapping you before the next set comes in!
Special recommendations: (left and right as you look out to sea)
Porthclais Left & Right; St. Justinian’s Bay; Porthgain Right
Abereiddy Left; Abercastle Left
Surfing: Whitesands (Porthmawr) Beach has plenty of room for everyone but please adhere to lifeguard flags and stick to the
chequered flag area, or keep well out the way at the south end. There’s a great café at the beach too, another worthwhile alternative
to Bitching.
Do Culture: St Davids is worth a look around at least once. There is never a shortage of galleries with coffee shops. There’s
the cathedral of course, and Bishops Palace. The best place to start your exploration is at the St Davids Visitor Centre at the east
end of the city. Check out Cafe Casablanca for movies and food.
Shopping: see the links section for good places to spend your money whilst consoling your wasted journey.
Do something else: Coasteering, surfing (proper surfing that is),
horse riding, climbing, abseiling, boat trips, walking, vineyards, chocolate factories, cheese farms and even sheepdog watching are
all in the area. Use the links menu to point you in the right direction.
