The proper name for the line of rocks that juts outs from Ramsey
Island into the sound is “The Bitches and Whelps”. Bitching takes its name from the last few of the rocks that are
left visible at high water. If you paddle out early enough you’ll also get to see the Whelps – the smaller rocks
that lie between.
Whelping is a little used term for paddling the Bitches on the ebb current. The flow is much slower and weaker
than the flood, as most of the current is pushed around the west side of Ramsey, but provide a great playground for
novice-intermediate paddlers under instruction. There's enough to entertain more experienced paddlers too, for a
while, especially when there is a ground swell. The timings are less critical than the flood and the Bitches and Whelps can be
reached directly, adjusting boat angle slightly towards the cliffs right of the farmhouse/quay.
The ebb begins 3h 25m before LW Milford
The ebb ends 3h after LW Milford
Be aware that the switch between ebb and flood can be indiscernible. The best time to go out are the hours either side of low
water. The water reaches a Grade 2 with some bigger waves when there is a swell running; surfing can be great fun when this happens
as you take elevator rides up and down. There are also numerous eddy lines, some very strong, but no major hydraulics to worry
beginners.
Overall it’s a great white water teaching spot; warmish water, reliable, deep water, large eddies…
